(Assignments adapted from chapter 14 of the textbook.)

Option 1: A Practical Proposal Addressing a Local Problem

Write a 1,500-1,750 word practical proposal using five to seven academic resources that offers a solution to a local problem. Your proposal should have three main sections: (1) description of the problem, (2) proposed solution, and (3) justification.

Proposals are usually accompanied by a letter of transmittal—a one-page business letter that introduces the proposal to its intended audience and provides background about the writer.

Document design is important in practical proposals, which are aimed at busy people who have to make many decisions under time constraints. An effective design helps establish the writer’s ethos as a quality-oriented professional and helps make the reading of the proposal as easy as possible. Refer to Megan Johnson’s argument on pages 330–333.

Formal Outline

The purpose of the Formal Outline is for students to organize their research and show the topical areas that they will cover throughout the Research Project. By breaking down the literature into various sections, topics, sub-topics, and details, students can divide large amounts of data into smaller, more orderly sections. The Formal Outline helps students organize their thoughts, stay on topic, and follow a logical order. It also provides students with the opportunity to show a progression of thought and direction, and can highlight specific areas of the Research Project that may need more or less attention.

The following article is helpful in structuring the paper: http://explorable.com/research-paper-outline- examples

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. Provide an Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.
2. Identify the main points and sections of the Research Project.
3. Identify the sub-topics and details consistent with the main points and sections.
4. Present information in an organized and logical manner.
5. Use at least three (3) new scholarly sources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia, Ask.com, Answers.com, Free dictionary.com, and other open source Websites do not qualify as scholarly.

HERE IS THE GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS OF THE GROUP COURSE WORK:
10.2 Assessment 002 (group-work, 50% weighting).
This is a group-work assignment, based on the online simulation ‘The Strategy Experience’.
Each student must be registered on the MyStrategyLab (Pearson Ed) support site, which is associated with
the BM7103 module text (Fundamentals of Strategy 2/e). Each student will be assigned to a “management
team” that will role-play as directors of a designated company [WRSX Group] at a series of board meetings.
The assignment (Ass002) is based on a final portfolio which contains:
• a short preliminary Business Plan (to be prepared in advance of the Week 10 class);
• written Reviews of decisions taken and resultant change in trading results and KPIs, identifying
(a) strategic importance and
(b) how business plan strategy is (or is not) being modified
note: tutors will advise for which designated WRSX Board Meetings.
• a written Reflection on the final outcomes, in context of intended/emergent strategy and the attained
financial results, financial and non-financial KPIs, share price.
The written Reviews and Reflection are expected to include critical analysis and evaluation, e.g.
• strategic rationale for the choice of agenda items and key decisions;
• adaptation to economic and market changes i.e. environmental conditions;
• reference to class material, module texts, and other relevant strategy sources/theories and cases.
Grade Descriptors for assignments are available in the student handbook.
.
11. Assessment criteria
Criteria are as defined in the appended postgraduate Grade Descriptors. Note: overall marks may be
adjusted for poor referencing or, in the case of Ass002, for lack of contribution to group-work.
For Assignment 002 (groupwork submissions), markers will be looking for the following:
• Clear strategic rationale given for agenda and actions decision taken
• Use and application of strategic management theories and models
• Analysis and evaluation of sustainability issues relevant to the strategic choices and decisions.
• Clear evidence of group participation
note: a peer review element (within the working group) will affect final individual mark – see also
section 12 below.
• Overall structure and integration
• Quality of written English and presentation of documents

12. Special instructions
12.1 Referencing
Careful referencing of sources is vital when making use of the work of others. You are expected to employ the APA referencing conventions, as recommended in the MBA Course Handbook. These conventions apply to information taken from internet sources, as well as books, journals and lectures. If you are unsure of the way to reference properly, seek advice from a member of staff before you submit the assessment. These are some of the points you should check before submitting your work:
• are all direct quotations, from both primary and secondary sources, suitably acknowledged (placed in
quotation marks or indented)?
• have you provided full details of the source of the quotation, according to the referencing convention
used in the Course?
• have you acknowledged the source of ideas not your own, even if you are not quoting directly from the source?
• have you avoided close paraphrase from sources? (Check that you are not presenting other people’s
words or phrasing as if they are your own.)
• if you have worked closely with others in preparing for this assessment, is the material you are
presenting sufficiently your own?

Demographic Transitions

Demographic transition is the process in which a nation transitions from being a less industrialized society, with high birth and death rates, to an industrialized nation, with lower birth and death rates. Many countries have already been through this transition including the United States, England, and Canada.
The demographic transition to an industrialized society is detrimental for the environment because industrialized societies tend to use up nonrenewable resources and give off pollution. Industrialized nations have the largest ecological and carbon footprint relative to developing or nonindustrialized countries. Fortunately, there are some benefits to the process of demographic transition, including lower birth and death rates. Essentially, people in industrialized countries have fewer children and this in turn helps control the overall population size.
Demographic transition involves the following five stages:
Stage 1 High birth rate, high death rate, low population size
Stage 2 High birth rate, decreasing death rate, increasing population size
Stage 3 Decreasing birth rate, decreasing death rate, increasing population size
Stage 4 Low birth rate, low death rate, high population size
Stage 5 Low birth rate, low death rate, population size decreasing
It should be noted that stage 5 is controversial, and it is sometimes not considered to be a stage. This is partially because so few countries are at this
Using the stages listed above, create a demographic and environmental timeline for one industrialized country, excluding the United States. The following are a few suggested industrialized nations:
• Canada
• England
• Germany
• Russia
• Italy
You can download the Demographic and Environmental Timeline—United States of America to review an example of such a timeline.
Include the following points in your timeline in order to examine the advantages and drawbacks of demographic transition in your selected country:
• Major historical changes that caused the shift from one stage to another (if available).
• Changing population size through time (increasing or decreasing).
• Increase or decrease of birth and death rates through time—particularly when considering the process of industrialization.
• Environmental impact of this transition.
• Dates (if available), series of events, and scholarly references for these items.
Support your timeline with appropriate examples and a minimum of three credible resources.

English and Literature

After reading Martinson, Anderson, and de Vries’ article and your specialization specific readings, respond to the following questions:

What new perspectives did you form after reading the article? Were there behaviors you had not previously considered a part of academic honesty?
Which behaviors pose special problems for you in your current or future professional specialization? Why?
What could you do to promote academic integrity and prevent the behaviors listed in the article in your own practice?
What strengths and weaknesses do you see in the article itself?

another half a page essay:

Read the Professional Problem relevant to your specialization in the Resources.
Respond to the following questions:
Who are the stakeholders or individuals involved in the problem?
What might be the similarities and differences in their perspectives on the problem?
How does understanding each of their views help you better understand and solve the problem?
What critical thinking errors did you recognize yourself slipping into—such as narrow-mindedness or intellectual unfairness—as you analyzed the problem?

Diversity and communication in the Workplace

For this assignment, you will write a 7-10 page research paper on professional communication. The general nature of the paper is flexible, but it should relate to one or more of the topics that you learned during your time as a PCM major.

Topics may include, but are not limited to*, the following:

a) Communication and Diversity in the Workplace

b) Verbal and Nonverbal Skills

c) Communication and Intercultural Relationships

d) Decision Making and Communication

e) Conflict, Communication, and Culture

f) Communication and Organizational Behavior

g) Business Ethics and Communication

h) Communication Skills and Leadership

i) Group Dynamics

j) Social Media for Mass Communication

It goes without saying that you may not use a paper that you wrote for another course for this project, nor may you use large parts of a paper that you wrote for a previous course. The paper should include original research and writing.

The paper should utilize but at the same time go beyond what we covered throughout the session about communication skills in the workplace. In this paper, your purpose is not merely to summarize literature. You need to connect the literature that you focus on to “actual” information, data and/or cases that you can find about the topic. This does not mean that you are required to gather new data. Rather, you are required to search for books, peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, news, government reports, media, reports from international organizations, cases or case study summaries, etc. that can help illustrate your points.

• An abstract is not required, but is welcome. If you choose to include an abstract, it will not be included in the page requirement of written text in the body of the paper.

•You must demonstrate content mastery of material through the use of other in-class writing assignments as deemed appropriate by the professor.

• You are expected to cite at least one new reference per each typed page. You may cite the textbook in your paper, but it will only count as one reference.

construction management cash flow

You have recently joined a high end residential builder as a Construction Manager, and have been given the responsibility of delivering a project at 8 Learmonth St Queenscliff. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your ability as a skilful Construction Manager who can balance the critical elements of time, cost and quality.
A full set of construction documents including: drawings, specifications, schedules, tender breakdown and contract are available.

Assignment 2

You are required to establish a cash flow for the project that reflects the construction programme.

For the purpose of your cash flow please assume the following:
• Client credit terms are as per the HIA contract
• Subcontractors and supplier credit terms are 30 days
• Preliminaries are to be spread evenly over the project
• All subcontractors and suppliers submit a claim for works complete for the week at the end of each week

The Operations Manager requires you to submit a concise report including:
• An excel spreadsheet showing the cash flow forecast and a line graph showing the money in, money out and net total
• A discussion on how negative cash flow can be managed and / or minimised for the project
• A discussion on the relationship between time, cost and quality and potential impacts on the organisation

Critical thinking

one page should be dedicated to this topic
While I could ask you who socialized you most and by what means were you personally socialized, I want to get a bit more philosophical. First, do you agree with the fundamental idea that each society has a culture based on agreed upon rules, norms, values and behaviors that are shared and exhibited by the majority of it’s members? Would most Americans identify with the elements outlined in the last chapter?? Are we “united”? If you agree, please say why and if you don’t then please explain that too. How would YOU describe our shared “rule book” and its applicability to everyone. Is it inevitable, based on how socialization works, that we would all be on the same metaphorical “page” when it comes to what we do and expect on a daily basis?

With regards to our shared culture, as noted above, there are many differences throughout our country whereby the norms of one area are “tweaked” a bit. Why do you think that happens? What would account for this?

Lastly, do you believe that is it possible to have norms, values and behaviors that are contrary to the dominant culture and not know it? If one is socialized to play by a different rule book than that of the dominant society, should they be penalized for not bending to the demands of the greater society? Or, should they be allowed to deviate? Under what circumstances should deviation be allowed and under what circumstances would negative sanctions be appropriate?

and one page should be dedicated to topic 2
With regards to “American” culture, it is clear that some of our values are more positive than others. Using your texts, as well as the extra handouts provided, please review the subject of values in America. What five values do we share that seem to be the most positive to you? Why do YOU think they are important? Can you explain how they help society (aka Functionalism)?

Secondly, what do you think are perhaps our three worst values? How do you think these values are/were shaped within our society and are perpetuated?? If they are so bad, why do you think they exist in the first place? Is there someone benefiting from perpetuation of a not so great value?

Lastly, how do you think some of our worst values are viewed by those from or within countries with less financial and governmental stability? What are the global ramifications of our value for convenience, materialism, racism and the like?? Is there any justifiable reason other countries might dislike their interpretation of the American way of life (as is represented in the media and by our consumerism)?
