Measures of Association

Researchers rely upon measures of association when they are interested in understanding the relationship between two variables. For example, you may be interested in the relationship between years of education and likelihood of finding a job. As the number of years of education increase, does the likelihood of finding a job also increase? These questions are best answered by using measures of association. There are several different measures of association; the selection of the correct measure of association depends upon the purpose of research for evaluation. Once you know the purpose, you can use four criteria to help select the best measure. The criteria, described in Chapter 13 of your textbook, are as follows: level of measurement, assignment of values to null and perfect relationships, the measure’s sensitivity, and familiarity with the statistic. Common measures of association, explained in your textbook, include lambda, gamma, Cramer’s V, tau, and Somers’ d.

Assignment:

1.Pick a public or non profit organization
2. Write one purpose for which measures of association might be used in that organization.
3.Explain which measure(s) of association you would use for that purpose and how the four criteria guided you to make that selection.

Employment Discrimination and the Bona Fide Occupation Qualification

In hiring a prospective employee, there are legitimate reasons for not hiring someone. For example, the prospective employee may not meet legal requirements (i.e., he or she is a minor and cannot complete the tasks of the job based on the young age) or positional requirements (i.e., he or she does not have the required experience or education for the position and the employer demonstrates this requirement as a business necessity).

Neither of these examples is discrimination. However, there are protected classes that cannot be discriminated against. Title VII provides five protected classes that cannot be discriminated against. For review of the protected classes, see page IV of this week’s module. However, Title VII only applies to companies with 15 employees or more.

Further, the bona fide occupational qualification (“BFOQ”) can be argued as a reason for discrimination by the employer, even of the protected classes. Importantly, though, is that race and color (two of the five protected classes under Title VII) are not on the list of permissible BFOQs.

For this assignment, complete the following:

Using the internet, research a case where an individual claimed discrimination, either in his or her hiring or firing, and the employer argued a permissible BFOQ was the reason behind the failure to hire or behind the firing.
Identify and clearly define the relevant law utilized by the court in determining the outcome of the case. This includes defining applicable legal doctrine, provisions of a law, or elements of a specific cause of action.
Apply facts from the researched situation to the applicable law, doctrine or cause of action researched.
Then, address the following:

Should Title VII apply to every company, regardless of number of employees?
Should race and color be permissible bona fide occupational qualifications or should the BFOQ exceptions to employment discrimination be removed completely?
In answering these questions, be sure to consider the effect on the business world and on society generally. Clearly summarize lessons learned from the week as they apply to your researched case. Identify new thoughts or ideas based on the module information and identify any related ethical issues.

Your paper should be 2-3 pages in length, not including the title or references page. Review the grading rubric, which can be accessed from the Course Information page, and make sure to follow the apa style

Professional Interview Analysis

Assignment Description
You will conduct an interview and write up a case study analyzing the interviewees’ beliefs on education in the context of the theories and thinkers covered in the course. The final document should be 6–8 pages (excluding title, abstract, and reference pages, and appendix).

Specific Guidelines
You will be asked to analyze the statements of another educator in the context of the thinkers covered in this course. Start seeking out a person of interest and line up an interview time early in the course.

The following is a recommended process:
• Identify the person to be interviewed. This person can be a teacher, administrator, or other educational professional working in K-12 or in a higher education environment. Be up-front with the person about your task. You will not use real names in your report.
• Develop 8–10 questions that will get at the heart of their particular worldview and basic philosophical principles. Keep in mind that you want to have enough substantive material to write your paper. As some cannot identify the philosophical basis of their practice as a teacher or administrator (or the like), the recommended approach includes asking questions about practitioner issues so as to see how they approach problems and real-to-life situations. This will provide you with a wonderful analysis. Provide the interview questions as an appendix to your paper.
• During the interview:
o It is recommended to record the interview if you are able. If not recorded, you must take detailed notes.
o Take note of any situational/environmental issues (anything that would have an impact on the interview).
o Be aware of your own bias as you interview. Be sure you are not taking any statements, etc… for granted. Question assumptions on your part.
o Of course, take notes.
• Writing it up/Analysis
o This assignment is really just giving you a tiny taste of real case study analysis. It is not a serious study and does not pretend to be.
o Write up the case using pseudonyms. Be sure to provide the reader with a description of the subject’s role/context, background (if you are able to gather it), your own reporting of what happened, your analysis, and your conclusions. While this seems to be a hefty project – try to keep it under eight pages.
o Your analysis is really an examination of the statements of the subject in light of your knowledge of philosophical leanings in education. This is not merely a summary of the interview; it must be an analysis of the subject’s remarks to the interview questions. Be sure to include specific citations and references to the various people, concepts, and resources addressed in the course text. You are trying to place your subject on the continuum of beliefs. Feel free to be critical.
o Your analysis must include proper citation of at least 5 references.
• Final notes
o You are being assessed on your ability to critically think about the subject’s statements, your knowledge of the philosophical theories, and your writing style (mechanics, spelling, grammar, and APA, etc).
o Have fun with this assignment.
