Media Ethics Rreporting

Scenario: You are a daily news reporter and have been assigned to cover one of the following stories (choose only one):
(1) A massive apartment fire in the city’s bustling downtown
(2) The homecoming of a battalion of U.S. soldiers from a war zone
(3) A sex scandal involving a prominent national politician from your community
(4) Presidential primary election day and results
(5) A court case involving a two police officers accused of corruption

Prepare the story using three forms of media types: a blog, an audio (transcript), and Social Media Post.

Write a 700-word summary in which you answer the following:

• What story are you telling?
• Which media dissemination channels will you choose? Why?
• What information are you highlighting? Why?
• Which number in the sequence will your story appear on TV and in an online story rundown? How did you come to this conclusion?
• What is the focus of your follow-up story for the next day?
Submit the summary with links to each of your stories.

Critical thinking

While I could ask you who socialized you most and by what means were you personally socialized, I want to get a bit more philosophical. First, do you agree with the fundamental idea that each society has a culture based on agreed upon rules, norms, values and behaviors that are shared and exhibited by the majority of it’s members? Would most Americans identify with the elements outlined in the last chapter?? Are we “united”? If you agree, please say why and if you don’t then please explain that too. How would YOU describe our shared “rule book” and its applicability to everyone. Is it inevitable, based on how socialization works, that we would all be on the same metaphorical “page” when it comes to what we do and expect on a daily basis?

With regards to our shared culture, as noted above, there are many differences throughout our country whereby the norms of one area are “tweaked” a bit. Why do you think that happens? What would account for this?

Lastly, do you believe that is it possible to have norms, values and behaviors that are contrary to the dominant culture and not know it? If one is socialized to play by a different rule book than that of the dominant society, should they be penalized for not bending to the demands of the greater society? Or, should they be allowed to deviate? Under what circumstances should deviation be allowed and under what circumstances would negative sanctions be appropriate?

Response Essay to War Dances

Choose one of the questions below and develop a thesis in response to your interpretation of the book War Dances. Be sure to refer to the book’s stories and/or poems as you write—in other words, use specific examples. You may also draw from your personal experiences as you develop this essay. Avoid extensive summary, aiming instead for extended analysis of the themes, characters, plot ideas, or structure of the text. The paper should be 4-6 typed, double-spaced pages. The questions below suggest an approach to this essay, but you must, as always, come up with the thesis on your own.

1. Most of our experiences in life are filtered through our own unique perception of events. Much of our perception is affected by our own sense of identity—who we are shapes how we “see” to some extent. Choose one or more aspects of identity (i.e. age, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality) that affect how characters in the stories or speakers in the poems in War Dances experience events in their life. Discuss the relationships between one’s identity and their thoughts and/or actions. Use specific examples to illustrate these points.

2. Many of the stories and most of the poetry have to do with modern-day males’ expression of emotion. Emotionality is sometimes considered the flip-side of rationality, wherein one’s reason can balance one’s feelings. Of course this works well as long as one achieves and maintains a balance. Choose characters in the stories or poems in War Dances that show men dealing with, or trying to deal with, their powerful emotions. What are the challenges? Who/What is successful? What, if anything, does this examination of male emotion in the book show to readers?

3. Human beings are both unique individuals as well as social animals. That is, our membership in group(s) (familial, tribal, cultural, etc.) and our relationships with other people may be nearly as important as our individual sense of identity. Analyze some of the relationships shown in the poems and stories in War Dances. What do these relationships show about the characters/speakers?

4. In the story “The Senator’s Son,” the father tells the son, “[w]e are tested, all of us. We are constantly and consistently given the choice. Good or evil. Light or darkness. Love or hate. Some of those decisions are huge and tragic” (pp.91-2). Choose some of the poems and/or stories from the book where characters are tested. What choices did they make? How did they come to terms with those choices? What does it show? Are there dichotomies other than those from the above quote, which inform your understanding of the themes in War Dances?

5. You likely noticed other themes in the book War Dances. If you choose this question, you may develop an analysis of any theme you found interesting. As with any of the questions, use specific examples from the stories and poems to develop your essay.

International Perceptions of Human Rights

Following the atrocities of World War II, world leaders created a legally binding declaration that would act as the foundation of international human rights law. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, drafted by committee members from several continents, represents “the universal recognition that basic rights and fundamental freedoms are inherent to all human beings . . . [w]hatever our nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status” (United Nations, n.d.-a, para. 2). The leaders recognized that these rights are “inalienable and equally applicable to everyone, and that every one of us is born free and equal in dignity and rights” (United Nations, n.d.-a, para. 2). Although the United Nations declared these rights to apply to everyone, individuals from various cultures differ in terms of ethical norms, codes of conduct, and values. How do these cultural differences in ethical norms and codes of conduct affect public administrators’ perceptions of human rights?

For this Discussion, select two cultures within one country (e.g., Basques and Romani people of Spain, the Sunni and the Shiites of Iraq, the Ainu and the traditional Japanese of Japan, or the Navajo and Latino cultures in the American Southwest).

The Assignment
Write a well organized explanation of how the cultural differences in the ethical norms and codes of conduct in your chosen countries might affect a public administrator’s perception of human rights within that country. Then, explain how both global governance structures and nongovernmental organizations might address these differences in ethical norms and values in order to improve human rights in that country.

Health Care and Life Sciences

The following scenario serves as the basis for your paper:
Manuel, one of your colleagues, is considering leaving his medical-surgical position where both of you have worked for the past 12 years. In fact, he has an interview in two weeks for a Telenurse Specialist position at a nurse-owned home health agency. This agency monitors the elderly and those with chronic illnesses to keep them from being readmitted to the hospital. Manuel is doing some research on his own and knows that the hours sound great and the pay is comparable. One advantage is that he can work from home (telecommute) most of the time and only interface with the agency for required meetings.
Manuel knows you are enrolled in this course. You have discussed various concepts that you noted in your Syllabus including technology, privacy, confidentiality, interoperability, legal and ethical issues, and patients’ access to the World Wide Web, just to name a few. Manuel has shared that he does not know much about telehealth and the role of nursing in this “new” technology. He has asked you to educate him on the advantages and disadvantages to patients of telenursing. Frankly, he does not understand what he might be doing on a day-to-day basis. One concern is the technology that may be involved.
Manuel has indicated that he realizes the final decision about a career move will be his choice, but he is seeking your knowledge based on concepts presented in this course. He wants to be knowledgeable about the role of the professional nurse in this practice setting prior to his interview.
You tell Manuel that you will need to do some research and that you will get back to him about your conclusion and recommendation. You have heard of telenursing and how it can prevent patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and CHF (congestive heart failure) from being readmitted to the hospital, but you recognize that you will need to do much more investigation.
DIRECTIONS
1. You are to research (find evidence), compose, and type a scholarly paper based on the scenario described above.Reflect on what you have learned in this class to date about technology, privacy rights, ethical issues, interoperability, patient satisfaction, consumer education, and other topics. Your text by Hebda (2013, Chapter 25) discusses telehealth in detail. However, your focus should be on the professional nurse’s role in telehealth, such astelenursing. Therefore, do not limit your review of the literature to your text.Nurses in various specialties need to know about the advantages and disadvantages of telenursing as it applies to their patients. For example, when you discharge a patient from an acute care setting, will a telenursing service assist that individual with staying out of the hospital? You may need to apply critical thinking skills to development of your paper.
2. Use Microsoft Word and APA formatting to develop your paper. Consult the Publication manual of the APA, 6th editionif you have questions, for example, margin size, font type and size (point), and so forth. Take advantage of the writing service,Smarthinking, which is accessed by clicking on the link called the Tutor Source, found under the Course Home tab. Also, review and use the various documents in DocSharing related to APA.
3. The length of the paper should be 4–5 pages, excluding the title page and the reference page. Limit your references to key sources.
4. The paper should contain an Introduction that catches the attention of the reader with interesting facts and supporting sources of evidence, which need to be mentioned as in-text citations. The Bodyshould present the advantages and disadvantages of telenursing from a patient perspective. The Conclusion and Recommendations should summarize your findings and state your position on whether Manuel should accept the position should it be offered to him.
5. NOTE: Review the section on Academic Honesty found in the Chamberlain Course Policies. All work must be original (in your own words) unless properly cited. This assignment will automatically be submitted through Turnitin, aplagiarism detection system.

Integrity & Personality Testing

Appeals concluded that Rent-a-Center’s use of the MMPI personality test probably prevented mentally challenged individuals from getting promotions in the company. Shortly after this ruling, Jeannine Cruz sued the Louisiana State Police claiming that she was discriminated against based on sex because her scores on several employment tests (including the MMPI) were not high enough to warrant promotion to a trooper position. In fact, her performance on the tests indicated that she was a candidate for “sexual misconduct” and “chemical dependency/” She claimed in her suit that the tests utilized are not fair to women because men tend to score more positively than do women. Some experts think that similar lawsuits can be expected based on the Rent-a-Center case if companies do not relate the test content to specific job content.

Questions for Discussion: Post to the Forums by midnight Thursday and respond to at least 2 members of the class by midnight, Sunday of the week. Please provide a minimum of three references or sources (not from Wikipedia or anonymous sources) to support your ideas, arguments, and opinions; correspond with at least 2 members of the class to discuss and weeks Forum subject.

1. Do you think employers should use integrity and personality tests to make recruiting and promotion decisions? Why or why not?
2. Can you think of some jobs where integrity and personality tests might be more appropriate than for other jobs? Give your rationale.
3. Do you think companies will use more or less integrity and personality tests in the next five years? Why?
