History 1730 – Spring 2018

Background Information/ResearchContemporary World History, by William J. Duiker, pages 298-306, Class Lectures.   In addition to Kaffir Boy, you will need a minimum of 2 other sources, for a total of 3 sources in your bibliography.  You should go to the Saint Paul College library or your public library for books on Apartheid or South Africa.  Do NOT use internet encyclopedias such as Wikipedia.

Paper Questions:

What does this primary source document (Mark Mathabane’s Kaffir Boy) teach us about the era of apartheid in South Africa?  What are some of the historical themes that he illustrates in his memoir?  Does he do a good job of illustrating this time period/historical event?  Why or why not?

In answering these questions, you should provide some context:   explain what apartheid was, when it took place, and for what purposes.  Make sure that your essay is not merely a summary of the book (a book report), but rather an analysis of Mathabane’s memoir.   You should weave the background context into your analysis seamlessly.

Due Dates:

  • Thesis, outline, and working bibliography due (please print out and turn in a paper copy). I will provide feedback on your outlines and return them to you after class.  Please feel free to email me your outline any time before then, particularly if you would like feedback on more than one draft.  Failure to turn in your thesis and outline will result in an automatic 10 point deduction.
  • Essay due via turnitin.com (If you have not created a turnitin account, please see the instructions on the last page of the Red Azalea Essay Guidelines, available on the course D2L under Materials/Content/Essays). The class ID is:  17217656.   Each day your essay is late, there will be a 10 point deduction in your grade.  After one week, I will no longer accept late essays.

Thesis/Outline:

By Thursday (or earlier), you should have:

  • A clearly articulated thesis statement
  • A well-organized outline with 3-5 sections (historical themes regarding the Apartheid Era that Mathabane demonstrates), with several specific examples underneath that
  • Working Bibliography, with a minimum of three sources (one primary, two or more secondary)

Thesis:  Introduce the title of document/book, author, and historical themes that it illustrates.

Outline:  (this is just a suggestion for a framework, not a strict guideline)

  1. First Historical Theme of Apartheid that Mathabane demonstrates
    1. Primary Source example from book (include quotes or page numbers)
    2. Primary Source example from book (include quotes or page numbers)
    3. Secondary Source background information (include quotes or page numbers)

  1. Second Historical Theme of Apartheid that Mathabane demonstrates
    1. Primary Source example from book (include quotes or page numbers)
    2. Primary Source example from book (include quotes or page numbers)
    3. Secondary Source background information (include quotes or page numbers)

  • Third Historical Theme of Apartheid that Mathabane demonstrates
    1. Primary Source example from book (include quotes or page numbers)
    2. Primary Source example from book (include quotes or page numbers)
    3. Secondary Source background information (include quotes or page numbers)

Essay Content:

Your paper should have:

  • An introductory paragraph which includes your clearly articulated thesis statement
  • Historical Context, where you explain the historical backdrop of Mathabane’s book, the era of apartheid in South Africa
  • The body of your essay, with 3-5 clearly defined sections according to your outline
  • A clear conclusion, where you circle back to your thesis, only this time fleshed out with the benefit of the evidence that you have just shared

Essay Format:

  • 4-6 typed pages
  • Double-spaced, using 12 point font and 1-inch margins
  • Any quotation or source information used MUST be cited correctly, using Chicago Manual of Style footnotes (do not use parenthetical references)
  • A fully formatted bibliography, again using Chicago Manual of Style (see below)

How to Create a footnote in your paper:

If you are using Microsoft Word 2007:

  1. In Microsoft Word, after you have typed your quote, after the quotation mark, click on Reference.
  2. Click on Insert Footnote. This will place a superscript number after your quote and bring you to the bottom of your page.
  3. Type in your bibliographical data in the correct format (see below).
  4. When finished, click on the text of your paper again to continue writing.

Correct Footnote formatting:

Author First Name Last Name, Title of Book (Publication City: Publisher, Year), page number of your quote.

**Note:  After you have cited from a source once, if you cite from that same source again, you do not have to include a full citation, but only this:

Author Last Name, page number of your quote.

Correct Bibliography formatting:

Author Last Name, First Name.  Title of Book.  Publication City: Publisher, Year.

Week 6: Milestone 3: Intervention and Evaluation

Purpose

The purpose of this PowerPoint presentation is to provide an opportunity to develop a community health nursing intervention and evaluation plan for a community health problem that you identified in your community (described in Milestone 2: Vulnerable Population Assessment). You will apply the components of the nursing process to assist this vulnerable population and develop a proposal that could be presented to community leaders.

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes.

CO1: Apply principles of nursing theory to the public health system by analyzing determinants of health and the public health intervention wheel. (PO 1)

CO3: Plan prevention and population-focused interventions for vulnerable populations using professional clinical judgment and evidence-based practice. (PO 4, 8)

CO4: Evaluate the delivery of care for individuals, families, aggregates, and communities based on theories and principles of nursing and related disciplines. (PO 1)

Points

This assignment is worth a total of 225 points.

Scenario

You are a community public health nurse (C/PHN) working with the vulnerable population you identified in Milestone 2. You will choose a specific community health role that would serve this population. You have analyzed the data collected from your windshield survey and vulnerable population assignments (the first two milestones) and identified one community health problem that a nurse can impact. Now, review the scholarly literature or scholarly websites listed below and identify one specific evidence-based nursing intervention that has the potential to improve the health of this group. Then develop a proposal to implement this intervention and a plan to evaluate the outcomes of this intervention. Create a PowerPoint that you could use to present to an organization in your community to request approval for funding and support for this intervention. (You are not required to implement the intervention or present your PowerPoint, though you may want to consider implementing your project in the future).

Explore the causes that claim the appearance of supine leg length discrepancy (LLD) is a sign of lower back somatic dysfunction

Structural (caused by bony asymmetry) LLD is not requested.
Written in Arial size 12, 1½ line spacing, page numbers, double space between
paragraphs, maximum 1500 words (10% over or under allowed) with word count after
essay conclusion (reference page and appendices do not count). (Optional:
maximum two ‘short’ appendices). No titles, subtitles, question marks, bold, bullet
points or charts within the body.
Writing style (EGSIU marking): Essay refers to title and marking criteria, written in
academic style (3rd person). An introduction (suggested 100-120 words) and
conclusion (suggested 100-120 words) without references as per further information
in this module handbook. A body correctly referenced, its content clearly expressed
and well-structured with linking and flowing paragraphs, correct grammar and
punctuation and without spelling mistakes.
CONTENT MARKING CRITERIA – (EGSIU marking)
Correctly referenced using Harvard System with suitable and relevant
academically sound sources
This criterion takes into account the following:
• Referencing in body follows Harvard system as per further information in this
module handbook.
• References are quoted correctly in the Reference page as per further
information in this module handbook.
• The suitability and relevance of academically sound sources used e.g. books
and academic journals. Level 5: At least 9 sources. Do not use College
notes as references.
This study has information that relates to the essay:
Qureshi Y et al (2014) Effects of somatic dysfunction on leg length and weight
bearing The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association
http://jaoa.org/article.aspx?articleid=2094690
Explores the causes that claim supine leg length discrepancy (LLD) is a sign of lower
back somatic dysfunction
Measuring LLD in the supine position is commonly used to assist reaching diagnostic
conclusions for lower back somatic dysfunction. Essentially, the patient lies supine,
unloading the pelvis, the osteopath’s thumbs are positioned below the medial malleoli to
measure LLD.
If LLD is found and confirmed not to be structural i.e. as a result of a bony deformity, various
structures can then be considered to be causing this finding and leading to lower back
somatic dysfunction. This criterion requires that you explore the various structures that can
cause the appearance of the supine LLD. To simplify your research, structural (caused by
bony asymmetry) LLD is not requested.
Reviews the sources that support or deny the validity of supine LLD as a sign of lower
back somatic dysfunction
This criterion requires that you review sources that confirm or deny the validity of the supine
LLD as a sign of lower back somatic dysfunction so that conclusions can be reached as to
the reliability of the findings.
