Application: Embracing Nationalism and Globalism

Application: Embracing Nationalism and Globalism

Nationalism, in its purest form, can be described as identification with a homeland in the struggle to ensure political independence, protect interests, and defend values. In its extreme form, nationalism is the belief that one nation is superior to other nations. For example, a larger more powerful nation may attempt to impose its way of life on a smaller less stable country in an effort to "civilize" or improve it. Conversely, globalism is an approach that recognizes multicultural equality and places global interests above the interests of individual nations. An example of globalism is sharing resources to help other countries continue to sustain their way of life. How can nationalism and globalism—two very different approaches to global social justice—co-exist and even complement each other?

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the article, "Nationalism." Consider the basic concepts of nationalism.
  • Review the article, "The New York Times, Norman Rockwell and the New Patriotism."
  • Consider common ground between the two approaches and ways they can complement each other.

The assignment: (2 pages)

  • Explain whether or not nationalism and globalism can be complementary. Justify your response.
  • Draw one conclusion or share one insight you gained about the nature of nationalism and globalism.
