HI 6005: Management And Organisations In A Global Environment

Holmes Institute MBA Program
HI 6005: Management and Organisations in a Global Environment
The final report on your topic will be written up as a seminar report (worth 15%) and submitted to your lecturer by the end of the semester. You may incorporate ideas generated in the live presentation. The written report should begin with the broad research topic which is followed by each individual component identified by the Individual student who prepared It.
Organisation of the research report
A key ingredient to writing a successful report involves the planning or organising stage. Organising can help you to sort out your ideas and to present your report in the order that communicates best to your readers. Organisation is the procedure of constructing an outline that acts as a plan for your writing task. An outline forces you to think before you write.
Your essay is to be structured and written as a business report. It, therefore, must begin with a Management (or Executive) Summary within which you state in stark form (i.e. unsupported by argument) what you are asserting in this report and you must do that in less than two pages.
As already stated above, you begin the main body of the report with some general background on the broad research topic. This introduction should end with a brief paragraph outlining the plan of the rest of the essay.
What follows is the specific issues of each individual component which were considered. As for any good business report these components should be structured into sections and sub-sections and the heading for these should be in the Table of Contents. In these individual components the in-depth discussion of the relevant issues is elaborated based on the existing literature and/or data. You must provide In-text references to your sources.
The last section of the report contains a brief summary followed by a complete list of references that are cited in the text of the essay. Follow a standard referencing method consistently.

Critical Analysis Of Leadership

ask
You will need to complete the following project on leadership that assesses leaders in a work-related environment.
This project focuses on critical analysis of leaders’ approaches to their leadership in a work-related environment and provides recommendations on how to sustain or improve leadership effectiveness.
Identify three ‘interviews’ or biographical accounts of Australian CEOs, business or third sector leaders from the Australian news media, a professional management journal or management-related magazine. Justify your selection.
Analyse these cases, and from a critical perspective, compare and contrast:
a) the ways in which each leader is constructed as a leader by the accounts;
b) how the leaders describe their conceptualisation of leadership;
c) how each leader conceptualises success through their leadership.
Critically evaluate how each leader’s practice of leadership impacts the success of their
organisation,
using relevant theoretical perspectives you have covered during your study of MGT536.
Identify organisational issues one of these three leaders is facing. Drawing on current leadership research (from the last five years) what advice would you offer this leader to assist them in addressing these issues?
Finally, draw conclusions from your entire critical analysis, and make recommendations about how relevant theories and research can assist leaders to fulfil their role.

The Fair Work Ombudsman Launched An Inquiry Into The Employment Practices Of 7 Eleven Organisation In Australia

Task
This assessment task extends the work that you have been doing in Assessment 1. In 2014, the Fair Work Ombudsman launched an inquiry into the employment practices of 7 Eleven organisation in Australia, with specific reference to its compliance with industrial relations laws relating to pay and conditions.
Central to the inquiry were allegations of illegal conduct relating to the treatment of visa holders employed by franchisees. Information about the report and the background to the inquiry can be found at this link: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/about-us/news-and-media-releases/2016-media-releases/april-2016/20160409-7-eleven-presser

Following the release of the report, there has been debate surrounding the employment of visa holders in Australia, notably student visa holders and s457 visa holders (skilled workers).
Your task in this assessment is to address the following questions.
1. Provide a summary of the 7 Eleven inquiry. Why was it done and what were the major findings?
2. Critically analyze any gaps in the Australian ER system that this raises in regard to the role of the state and the role of unions. (You will need to do some background reading on these two aspects in order to provide an evidence-based argument.)
3. Discuss the implications of the ER regulation in Australia – not just 7 Eleven. (You will need to blend professional, newspaper and academic sources.)
Given the recency of this inquiry, there is quite a lot of material available.

Rationale
Successful completion of this assessment task will help you demonstrate achievement of the following learning outcomes in HRM523.
– apply specialized knowledge to solve complex problems relating to the Australian industrial relations system
– synthesise and apply theoretical frameworks and scholarly research to critically analyze issues relating to the practice of industrial relations in Australia
– employ academic writing and information literacy skills.
