ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL: SITUATIONAL APPROACHES TO LEADERSHIP

Assignment Overview
For this assignment, first review the background materials with a focus on Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership model. Make sure you are familiar with the four leadership styles covered in the situational approach including Directing, Coaching, Supporting, and Delegating and situations where you are supposed to use these four styles.
Also, familiarize yourself with the more complex Path-Goal model and Fiedler's Contingency model. You do not need to know these two models in as much detail as the Situational model to complete this assignment, but make sure you understand the main idea of these models as well as some of their main advantages and disadvantages.
Case Assignment
1. For each of the following situations, explain which of the four leadership styles covered in the Situational model should be used and explain its reasoning with references to Chapter 4 of Avery (2011) and at least one other required reading from the background materials:
A. You are in charge of a team of architects. They are highly skilled but have strong opinions and do not necessarily follow instructions. These architects are independent thinkers who are used to doing things their own way.
B. You are in charge of a fast-food restaurant. The employees are all teenagers who have not yet graduated from high school, and this is the first job for most of them.
C. You are the supervisor of a team of software engineers. They are all highly skilled and highly motivated, and are used to working independently. All of them believe in the mission of the company. 2. Each of the three models (Situational, Fielder Contingency, Path-Goal) covered in this module involves both "inputs" and "outputs." For example, Situational Leadership involves taking employee commitment and competency inputs and then-based on the employee information-choosing Directing, Coaching, Supporting, or Delegating as an output. Create a table comparing and contrasting the three models in terms of inputs and outputs, and include a 1- or 2-paragraph discussion of your table.motivated, and are used to working independently. All of them believe in the mission of the company.

3. Based on your table in Part 2 above and the readings, which of the three models do you think is most useful? Take into consideration both your ability to adapt leadership styles to realistic situations you may face, as well as ease of use of the model.

A merger will lead to a bigger firm and a greater market concentration

A merger will lead to a bigger firm and a greater market concentration. This can have both advantages and disadvantages for the public interest. A merger is likely to reduce competition and give the new firm more market power. Therefore, it will be able to increase prices leading to a decline in consumer surplus and could cause economic inefficiency. This occurs when goods are not distributed optimally according to consumer preferences. However, it depends upon the market share of the new firm. When, if ever should a government intervene to prevent a merger or takeover?

Instructions:

You will need to do an in-depth literary search on the topic in order to create a fully-developed response. You will need to include in-text citations and a references list for external references used in supporting your points for this question. You should have no fewer than 7 references for your response to this particular question, 4 of which must be from peer-reviewed sources.

Stratification And Prejudice In Current Events

The purpose of this assignment is to explore stratification and prejudice in current events. Despite great advances towards equality between the races and genders, racial and gender discrimination, as well as class stratification remain serious social problems. To conclude this course, you will use the news media to discover current social issues with regards to race and gender.

To complete this assignment, perform the following tasks:

  • Using newspapers, news websites, or news magazines, select three current events (within the last six months) that reflect our studies on stratification.  One event should represent racial issues, one gender issues, and one class issues.  All three should demonstrate discrimination and/or stratification in American society.
  • Using your research, describe the current events and how they are reflective of your studies on racial, gender, and class discrimination and/or stratification.
  • Analyze the events and apply the lecture and text to the news articles. What theories of stratification apply?  Are the current events representative of the historical trends of racial, gender, and class discrimination and or/stratification? What solutions, if any, should be applied to these current events?
  • In your discussion, apply your personal experiences and observations to the current events.
  • How do you feel that the media perpetuates discrimination and/or stratification based on race, gender, and class?  Support your ideas with concepts from the text and/or appropriate outside resources.

Provide a minimum of three references and apply the correct APA standards in the format of text, citations, and references.  Your paper should include a title page and reference. Your paper should be at least five pages in length, not including the title and reference pages.

The Hawthorne Effect was a research focused on investigating methods of increasing productivity in an electrical company

The Hawthorne Effect was a research focused on investigating methods of increasing productivity in an electrical company (McCarney, 2007). Based on the study there is always an increase in productivity irrespective of the circumstances (Levitt & List, 2009). So, if lighting conditions were improved and then reduced productivity would still increase. According to McCarney (2007), this outcome may be described as â € œan increase in worker productivity produced by the psychological stimulus of being singled out and made to feel importantâ €. The study highlights various data collection issues. One major data collection issue has to do with the use of questions without answers / incomplete data. This was a very risky move by the researcher as the smallest amount of missing data could make the research unreliable or unsuitable. The second data collection issue had to do with the fact that there participants knew when the lighting was going to change, so they had the opportunity to change their behaviors if they wanted. This was out right bias. Therefore, it could be concluded that if participants were unaware of the changing of the lights there behaviors could differ which would give the study a different outcome. According to McDavid, (2013), this could be viewed as a Response shift bias. References Levitt, S., & List, J. (2009). Was there really a Hawthorne effect at the Hawthorne plant? Amazon Case Study: Amazon Under Fire

Amazon case study: Amazon Under Fire
The following is a reproduction, with some paraphrasing, of a news article that recently appeared on Forbes.com. It highlights the difficulty corporations face in getting shareholders to reward their growth strategies. You should be aware, as hinted by this article, that although Amazon reports staggering revenue figures, its high cost margins mean that profits, when they are achieved, are relatively small.
Amazon under fire: What happens when sales growth isn’t enough?
The headline figure in Amazon.com’s 2014 second-quarter earnings report looked great — a 23% jump in sales from the prior year, to $19.3 billion — but the underlying figures for the unprofitable online retailer brought out the pessimists on Wall Street.
Amazon shares plummeted almost 11%, knocking $3.5 billion off the fortune of founder and CEO Jeff Bezos (now at $29.3 billion), after it lost 27 cents per share, much worse than the consensus estimate of 15 cents. The company’s perpetual lack of interest in turning a consistent profit and declining gross margins — which could fall further given the company’s ambitious investing in new areas — sparked concern among the analysts that watch the company.
“[Investors] are less patient than before regarding ongoing margin pressure,” wrote Canaccord’s Michael Graham, who rates the stock a hold and dropped his price target to $340 after Thursday’s results.
UBS analyst Eric Sheridan argues that Amazon can keep growing revenue at a 20% annual clip, but that it might not be enough for the market. He thinks investors “will struggle to buy the stock until more gross profit drops to operating income.”

Raymond James’ Aaron Kessler dropped his rating to market perform despite remaining bullish on Amazon’s long-term prospects, mostly because he expects shares to be stuck in a trading range “given continued high levels of investment combined with slowing unit growth (especially international growth).”
More of the same came from Barclays Capital analyst Paul Vogel. “Amazon has always operated at razor thin margins,” he wrote, “but rapid revenue growth and optimism on long-term margin upside has been able to sustain the stock.” That’s certainly true, as shares have returned almost 700% over the last decade. But Vogel worries that “[w]ith revenue growth decelerating and margins moving in the wrong direction, the stock could be in for a bumpy ride.”

Goldman Sachs’ Heath Terry offered a similar sentiment. Terry noted that the pressure on Amazon margins are “clearly testing investor patience,” but argued that Bezos’ focus on constant investments in areas like grocery deliveries will have a productive endpoint. “We believe, as they have historically, these investments will generate incrementally higher levels of revenue and operating cash flow growth, ultimately driving share price outperformance.”
At the moment though, confidence that Bezos knows best isn’t running at an all-time high. With Friday morning’s 10.7% loss to $320.42, shares of Amazon are down nearly 20% for the year (Schaefer 2014).
